How to play Blackball Pool
The numbered solids and stripes represent the two Blackball groups. Groups are assigned on the first legal normal shot after the break that pockets balls from only one group. Pocket all seven of your group, then make the black 8 ball on a legal stroke. Shots are not called.
The alternating Blackball rack places the black on the foot spot. The baulk area is used for the opening cue ball and optional placement after a foul.
Blackball Pool rules used in this game
Break and open table
Start with the cue ball in baulk. Pocket a ball or drive at least two object balls across the centre string. The table remains open after the break. If the black is pocketed on the break, all balls are reracked and the same player breaks again.
Choosing groups
A legal normal shot that pockets balls from only one group assigns that group to the shooter. A break shot or free shot cannot assign groups. After assignment, contact a ball from your own group first until none remain; the black then becomes your legal target.
Free shot after a foul
A foul awards the incoming player one free shot followed by a normal visit. During the free shot, the wrong-ball-first restriction is suspended, so any object ball may be contacted first. The player may leave the cue ball where it lies or use the on-screen control to take it in hand in baulk. A legal pot on the free shot keeps the same player at the table for the normal visit.
Fouls and the black
Fouls include a scratch, a ball off the table, illegal cue-ball placement outside baulk, no contact, wrong first contact, and a dry shot with no cushion when the player is not snookered. Pocketing only an opponent’s group after assignment is also a foul. You lose if the black falls on an illegal stroke or before your group is cleared.
Baulk placement, aiming and spin
When a free shot is active, choose whether to play the cue ball in position or select Take cue ball in baulk. Place it anywhere within the marked baulk area, then aim normally. The HUD identifies your group and whether the free shot is active.
Use follow and draw for short positional routes. Smaller English Pool patterns often reward precise speed more than heavy side spin. Keep the cue ball away from blocked rails and preserve an angle on your final group ball that leads naturally to the black.

Choose groups by access
Count problem balls, not just balls already pocketed. Prefer the group with open lanes, fewer cushion-bound balls and a useful final ball near a route to the black.
Use the free shot to solve a problem
The free shot can open a cluster, remove an opponent’s blocker or create position for the normal visit. Do not spend it on an easy ball if touching another ball first produces a larger positional advantage.
Keep a key ball for the black
Before clearing the group, choose the likely black pocket and the ball that delivers the correct approach. Removing that key ball too early can leave a difficult bank or long cut on the final shot.
Recognize legal snookers
If no direct part of a legal target is visible, the no-cushion condition is relaxed after contact in the game’s adjudication. Even so, aim to leave a legal ball or cushion path rather than depending on a marginal escape.
